The role
The Ophthalmic Epidemiology Research Unit is seeking a dedicated Research Fellow to support our innovative research projects, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and retinal imaging to detect sight-threatening conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration and life-threatening conditions like high intracranial pressure, heart attack.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Develop research materials, including drafting protocols and optimising processes
- Conduct data collection, entry, and analysis using statistical software and programming tools
- Use statistical tools and decision analysis methods to support structured research assessments
- Maintain accurate records of research activities and compile results for presentations
- Prepare manuscripts for publication and submit findings for conference presentations.
Your skills and experience
- Ph.D. in artificial intelligence, big data, digital health, or epidemiology (mandatory)
- Extensive experience in data analysis and modelling using statistical software and programming languages such as STATA, SAS, Python, or R
- Proven ability to conceptualise, coordinate, and manage clinical trials effectively
- Strong track record in conducting impactful research, publishing findings, and securing grant funding
- Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to plan, prioritise tasks, and adapt to changing needs
- High level interpersonal skills, including the ability to form productive professional relationships and communicate effectively with various stakeholders and team members
- A solutions-oriented approach with a commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment.

The Centre for Eye Research Australia is a not-for-profit and an international leader in eye research with real world impact. We are an independent Medical Research Institute closely affiliated with the University of Melbourne within the discipline of ophthalmology in the Department of Surgery, Melbourne Medical School. Our staff and students are located at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and 200 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne.
